One question may have is, what is the difference between a sales funnel and a marketing funnel?

Just two terms that mean one and the same?

While they are quite often used interchangeably, the terms actually have different meanings.

What is a Marketing Funnel?

A marketing funnel is the top half of a whole funnel. 

This is the part of the funnel where we work to attract visitors to our brand and our message. This can be through various forms such as blogging, paid adverting, word-of-mouth, and more.

Some common questions that we must find answers to with our marketing funnel:

  • How do we plan to attract visitors to our brand?
  • What value are we going to provide visitors so they will give us their contact information?
  • How do our lead magnets relate to our overall message?
  • How do our lead magnets attract the right people who will want to buy our product?
  • How can we segment our leads to be more valuable to the sales team?

The marketing funnel is all about getting people in the door, giving them value, and positioning your brand as the expert and your product or service as the solution.

What is a Sales Funnel?

A sales funnel is the bottom half of the whole funnel.

Sales Funnel is commonly used as the term in which people refer to the entirety of the funnel, as the sale is the ultimate goal.

However, in reality, it is the bottom half of the funnel where we take our marketing qualified leads (MQLs), and see which ones are a good fit to be Sales Qualified Leads (SQLs).

Some may think that everyone who is interested in our product would be a good candidate to make a sale to, but this is not always the case.

Through the sales funnel, prospects are vetted to see if they are a good fit.

Here are some common questions asked within the sales funnel that we must answer:

  • Does the prospect have enough money to afford our solution?
  • Is our solution actually going to be a good fit for the prospects problems?
  • Do we have the resources to help the prospect?
  • Do we have enough time to help the prospect?
  • Is the prospect even interested in making a purchase? Or are they simply interested in our free value offers?

Again, we must vet people that make it through the marketing funnel. If we fail to do this we will end up with clients who demand the world, but cannot afford our services; clients who think our product or service will help them, but become disappointed when it isn’t a good fit; expect too much work to fast, or drag the project out until we are eating costs; or people who seem like they may purchase, but are just there for the free information.

This last point isn’t always a bad thing, as people who love our expertise will often become champions of our brand and provide a lot of word-of-mouth marketing for us, even if they never do make a purchase themselves.

Putting It All Together

People running the sales and marketing funnels should always be in contact with one another.

Goals can be set on the marketing side to product a certain number of sales leads per month.

Goals can be set on the sales side to convert a certain percentage of MQLs into purchases.

The line of communication should always be open for the best possible results.
